Work in the Towers

Klaus and Eduardo are continuing to remove the floors / ceilings in the right hand round tower. The main problem is removing all of the rubble that we create. It does not take so long to knock down a ceiling or remove a floor but it takes forever to get all the rubble out of the chateau and transported to the recycling centre. Some of the rubble we
keep if it is suitable for hardcore as we will need this at a later date. Now that the top floor ceiling is down we formulated a plan to make it easier to get the rubble out. We will make a hole in each floor so that we can drop the rubble all the way down to the ground floor. We can not get the chute out of the tower window because it is too small for the chute to fit in. I had assumed that each floor / ceiling would be of similar construction but of course no!

The floor of the top tower room had a vinyl floor laid, when we removed it we discovered clay tiles underneath, all in very good condition. We will keep these and relay them. Under these tiles was a layer of earth and under the earth we then found oak boards - not fixed down, just laid on the beams below! Interesting in that the space between these beams and the lathe and plaster below was filled with old walnut shells!

The beams that we had exposed in the highest levels
of the tower had been arranged in a fan shape. However this is not the case further down where the beams are laid in the traditional way - lengthways. This is good as it will make it much easier to plaster between them. When we lifted part of the wooden floor in the room on the first floor we found it was directly fixed to the beams, no earth, no walnut shells or vinyl flooring anywhere in sight! By the end of the day we had holes that we can drop the rubble down all the way to the ground level. The bottom room of this tower also has large double doors to which we can back the trailer right up to - easy peasy from now on!!
