Another Well

Whilst clearing away all the weeds, brambles and trees in the farm
courtyard area of the outbuildings we made a nice discovery. We think we might have found an old well. It was covered up by a large stone slab. When we moved the slab we found a hole in the ground which we first assumed was a drain, but closer inspection revealed some old stonework
inside the hole. It is not very deep and as yet we have not tried to remove the rubbish that has built up in there and see how deep it is. We cannot think of anything else that it could be other than a well. I am not sure just how old the buildings are in this part of the grounds. Certainly 300 years but most likely a lot older! This area seems to have been built and used  as a
farmyard judging by the old buildings and what appears to be a cobbled area. There are buildings for keeping pigs (we found the feeding troughs) and also for hens. We can see can posts and supports on the old walls where gates would have been hung. Once we dig out the hole we will hopefully learn some more.
