More Moat

Having cleared one part of the moat a few days ago, today it was time to do the other side of it. Here it is a lot wider and runs along the back of the chateau. Whilst it is not too badly overgrown it does have a lot of dead trees as you can see in the first photo. The problem has been that when new trees start to
grown close to existing trees they have not been pulled out resulting in quite a few trees all clumped together. There is then not enough water or light for all of them and you end up with dead or dying trees. So today we set about clearing up this area. The other problem is that lots of dead leaves fall into the
moat from overhanging branches. the cleanup went well and was finished in one day including burning all the smaller branches and getting the larger ones and the stumps ready for logging! In the longer term we want to repair and rebuild the old stone wall that formed the moat hundreds of years ago. Sadly there is not very much of it left now. Would back fill it with all the soil / rotted leaves that form the soft bed of the moat to make it level with the back garden. Hopefully we will then be able to keep water in the moat all year round which will be a great feature.
