Progress and a new toy

Today we took delivery of a new toy for 6 days! A cherry picker
workstation which we will put to good use. The first job will be cutting down some high trees that have grown in the courtyard of the outbuildings. These trees are very close to the buildings so we have to be careful not to hit the roofs when we cut them down - more of this is a few days when we have finished!

Second job for the cherry picker is to get us high up to the roof line of the chateau. When the new roof was put on new gutters were also fitted but for some strange reason not new drainpipes! So we have to refit, renew and repair these as they are all leaking. There are lots of them and they are between 8 & 10 metres high. You can see in one of the photos that there is even a small tree growing out of the wall, why this was never taken out is beyond belief. Those who know me well will know that I am not a fan of heights at al so it looks like it will be a "fun" week - that being fun with a capital F!!

Four of the big window frames in the chateau roof are made of metal and are rusting a bit so we plan to treat the rust and then repaint the frames so they are protected before winter really hits.

Lastly we will need the cherry picker for repairing the big crack in the outside wall (see earlier post). Mark has made good progress with the new concrete block work in the ground floor cupboard, this is the area of the wall where it is weakest and once the block work is done it will be as strong if not stronger than the rest of the wall. These were at one point doors in the oldest main wall of the chateau - you can see in the photos quite clearly the old wall and where the doorway was. In the last photo you can see how we are building the new block work to support the wall and fill in the old doorway. Once that it is done we can use the cherry picker to rebuild the outside wall where it has come away. Again watch this space!
