Why we cut the trees down

Tree leaning over the lake
Rotten
It occurred to me this week that we are actually cutting down a lot of trees and that an explanation is required. Firstly let me say that for every tree that we cut down we will be planting at least two new ones. Also nearly all of the wood that we are getting, and there really is a lot will be used for heating in the future. The chateau has been here for many hundreds of years and there are some beautiful old trees in the grounds and we are of course keeping and cherishing these.

However due to the fact that nobody has really been maintaining the chateau or the grounds properly for at least 20 - 30 years there are a lot of problems. One of these problems is that there are many dead trees. They have died due to a lack of light and water. We have been thinning out the trees to allow them plenty of both. Also there are lots of trees growing next to buildings, out of walls and even inside buildings in a few places! In a previous post you will
see how we cleared out along one side of the lake. This week there has been an example at the lake of why we need to take away some trees. There was a very big and very rotten tree hanging out over the lake and it was in a position that would have made it very hard to cut down. Well this week it saved us the trouble by falling down - into the lake! So now we have to get a tractor and drag as much of it as we can out of the lake and then next summer get a boat and try and retrieve all the broke branches that are in the lake from this tree and others. Th first two photos are of the tree still standing a couple of weeks ago and the last two of course are of it now in the lake!
