Decoding the past

Over the last few days it has been exciting work uncovering a floor from most likely the 1400 - 1500's. It has been long and careful work removing most of the 18th century tiled floor that covered it. We have left some of the more recent 1700's floor to preserve the history of the room. The room will soon become a bathroom with the old floors becoming a great feature in the room. All we will do is repoint

between the tiles and slabs to stabilise them. The old fireplace will stay pretty much as it is with the smoke darkened back. We will clean off the ugly modern paint to reveal the ancient stone. For me revealing these old features has been one of the most satisfying things that we have done in the chateau to date.
