Heavy work

This week we are starting to dig out 40 cm of earth from the floors ready for pouring new cement ones. We also have two dig the trenches for a couple of sewage pipes. Of course where ever we dig here we find stone blocks and rock, lots of them!

So when Eduardo started digging beneath a window where there is just a thin wall we should have know to expect trouble. There is no reason to expect that there should be any big foundations here but if you look at the photos you will see how wrong we were! In front of the window coming
into the room is huge cut & shaped stone. Obviously a foundation stone to support something pretty big - but what. It has no connection to the wall that was built in the mid 1700's and is outside of the chateau external wall from the 1500's so I can only assume that it is part of the foundation for a part of the original 1200's chateau that was most likely demolished in the 1500's.
