The hole story

This week Michelle and Mark have been working in one of the rooms cleaning all the stone walls ready for re pointing. Mark has also been repairing and closing up the opening where the fireplace was. A couple of
weeks ago when we chiseled off the old plaster to the left of the chimney we noticed two extra large stone blocks in the wall. Today Michelle was trying to clean them up a bit and discovered that only one was in fact a stone block, the other had been plastered to look like one. When the plaster came off it revealed some brickwork.
We of course had  to remove it to see just what it was hiding, hoping to find something interesting or better still valuable hidden away behind the brickwork. Sadly it was just a large hole that was presumably used for storage in the long distant past. Always nice to find these unexpected glimpses of older days in the chateau!
