Door to a window

Way back in June we started some changes to the outside of the chateau. There was a door into the middle wing the we were pretty sure was originally a window. We wanted to make it into a window again. The reason being that the room was going to be a bathroom and you don't need an outside door into a bathroom - a window is much better!

It was quite an easy job to remove the door which we have kept for use elsewhere. As the electric and water supply for this wing will come in here we then had to dig out a channel under the wall for the cables and pipes to run through. We used a very big stone block that was just lying in the farmyard area as a base to rebuild the wall on above the channel.

Then we repaired and built the wall that would run underneath what would become the window. We needed a new window ledge and for this we would need to cut a large piece of stone block. We also needed a stonemason and today he arrived! There was another large old stone block lying in the farmyard. It was about the right size and better still already had a reveal cut into it. Downside was that is was incredibly heavy! Once it had been cut to size we had to manoeuvre it into place.

Then it had to be set in place and a couple more blocks cut for the surround. Final stage was to repair the last part of the wall and hey presto job is finally done! Quite a difference and looks great.
