Cleaning the pointing

Now that Mark has re-pointed the stone at the side of the tower where we removed the tree I have to clean it all up and brush off the excess. It is an easy job that just requires time and a little patience! You can see in the top photo just how much of the render and mortar has been washed away by the water over the years.

Once cleaned up the stonework is looking its best again and also it is much more stable now. If this had been left for another year it is quite likely that some of it would have collapsed! Look at the top of the second photo, you will see a very old piece of carved stone that has been reused by the builders in the 1700's. This little stone would have formed part of the decorated stone in the original chateau from the 1200's. There is also a similar stone lower down at the side of the wall.
